Revoicing Opera

Jassy Husk's research explores how creative practice can challenge traditional narratives within opera and music theatre.

Her Doctor of Musical Arts research at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, examined how contemporary performance can re-imagine female agency through the creation of new operatic works.

Using practice-led research, the thesis investigates how performers can move beyond inherited operatic stereotypes by creating new works that reposition women as agents of their own stories. Central to this research is PYRATES!, an original music theatre work developed through multiple public performances, workshops and creative iterations.

The research brings together performance, composition, dramaturgy, feminist theory and autoethnography, demonstrating how creative practice can itself become a method of generating new knowledge.

Jassy regularly presents conference papers, guest lectures and masterclasses exploring opera, performance, gender, creativity and practice-led research.
